Learn More About Our Cross Correlation

You may use the Cross Correlation Map compare one statistic to another. The first statistic you select, from the pulldowns below, colors the map yellow (low value states), light green (middle value states), dark green, (high value states). Then select another statistic from the pulldowns and the correlation appears in the colored consoles. The values presented are summaries of the 2nd statistic as compared to the lower, middle, and higher values from the first selection. When you are ready to perform a new cross correlation, click on the “Clear Map and Criteria” button.

For example: Select Obesity from the Health pulldown. The map is colored yellow, light green and dark green with regard to Obesity rates. The states with the lowest obesity rate are colored yellow. The states with the highest obesity rate are colored dark green. The values in the middle are colored light green.

Next select Longevity from the Health pulldown. The stats in the yellow box show the values for Longevity for the states with the lowest Obesity values. The stats in the dark green box show the values for Life Expectancy for the states with the highest Obesity values. The stats in the light green box show the values for Life Expectancy for the states with the middle Obesity values. The statistics in this case back up intuition. States with a lower obesity rate have a higher life expectancy and the sates with a higher obesity rate have a lower life expectancy.
